One of the most devastating weapons in Yi Soon Shin’s arsenal was the impenetrable Kobukson (A.K.A. The Turtle Ship). The Kobukson was a death warrant to the Japanese. With only three of these ships, the Korean Navy was able to forcefully break through enemy lines and cause massive casualties to the Japanese Armada.
The ship was designed based on sketches that Yi Soon Shin discovered from the year 1415AD. Admiral Yi had his master shipwright, Lieutenant Na Dae Yong refine the design. The ship itself was much smaller than the other battle ships that were used during the Imjin War.
There is very little information of what the real Kobukson looked like. Till this day, many historians debate that the interior of the ship had between 2-3 levels. The top level was used for entry and controlling the sails. Artillery and the oarsmen shared the middle level, while the lower level was a mini barracks and storage area where cannon balls and arrows were stored.
